Design Essentials Blogger Beauty Day Makeovers

Tuesday, December 6, 2011 I had the pleasure of participating in a Blogger Holiday Makeover hosted by Design Essentials at McBride Research Laboratories! I was invited by Lenora Bowler of Brainchild Associates. Upon my entrance I was embraced by my stylist of the day, Francesa Adams who is a Design Essentials Educator. As a DIYer, I was somewhat nervous about letting someone do my hair other than myself. She explained to me that she has been a Cosmetologist for twelve years! We decided to style my hair in Finger Coils! If you are one of my Youtube subscribers, then you are aware that I have attempted this style (fingerstyling) but didn't have the results that I imagined. I was eager to begin my transformation!

The picture above is the my Before picture. My hair was in a old wash & go that was pulled up into a messy bun. Hair was taken down so we could capture my hair in its natural state. Fran first began by shampooing my hair with Organic Cleanse Deep Cleansing Shampoo to deeply cleanse the hair of buildup. I hadn't washed my hair in a few days so I definitely had buildup. My scalp felt so light once the shampoo was complete. Next she used Natural Curl Cleanser Sulfate Free Shampoo.

My hair was then conditioned with Express Instant Moisturizing Conditioner and Design Essentials Natural Moisturizing Conditioner. Fran combed HCO Leave-In Conditoner and Blow Drying Lotion onto my hair which is excellent as a leave-in but it also helps prevent damage. It quickly penetrates deep within the hair shaft to replenish proteins. Next up was prepping my hair for styling. Fran applied Design Essentials Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion to my hair.

I wanted gorgeous curls! So Fran and I decided on Finger Coils since my very curly curl pattern is ideal for that style choice. Finger Coils are a beautiful natural style that can be found in the Design Essentials Natural Step by Step Styling Guide http://www.designessentials.com/natural-system/style-guide. My hair is multi-textured. I have looser curls around the perimeter of my head and tighter curls at the top of my head. Fran applied Design Essentials Natural Defining Crème Gel in the back sections of my hair to add more definition to my curls. She applied Curl Stretching Cream in the front to elongate my curls. Fran started the coils at the back of my head then progressed up, ear to ear. Since my hair is multi-textured, Fran used Flexi Rods around the frame of my face where my curl pattern is looser so that she could achieve consistency throughout the style.

NK: Whats your name where are you from?

Amy: Amy Fields. I'm from New Orleans.

NK: Tell me something about you?

Amy: I'm 26. I'm mixed with black and white. Married with 2 kids.

NK: When did your natural hair journey begin and what influenced your decision to brave down that path?

Amy: My jounrney began 5 years ago. I decided to stop relaxing. Waited a year, then BC'd. No influence really. I just didn't agree with forcing my hair to permanently be something it's not.

NK: What is your regimen?

Amy: My regimen is very very simple. I do my hair once a week using conditioner only. (I don't use towels, I use t-shirts) I section into fours, detangle while soaking wet and with loads of conditioner. I diffuse on low heat and low setting. Then I gently tug with my fingers if I want to add volume.

NK: What products and tools do you use?

Amy: Herbal Essences conditioner (the purple bottle because it smells awesome!). A modified Denman brush (I took a few rows of bristles out). Butterfly clips. Olive oil on my ends in the winter. A bit of IC Fantasia Gel only on the parts of my hair that's exposed to the elements (air, sofa, my hands, lol) to help control frizz.

NK: Do you feel there is enough information for naturals?

Amy: YES, now. When I first went natural I couldn't find much. However, now there's all kinds of helpful info with websites, blogsites, and the wonderful YouTube!

NK: What has helped you in your healthy hair journey? Websites, forums etc

Amy: tightlycurly.com and the curly girl method.

NK: How do you think your natural hair affects the way others view you?

Amy: I think if gives off a sense of awareness. It says that I don't have to look like YOU! I've been told that it exudes confidence.

NK: How has this journey impacted your perception of yourself?

Amy: I feel like this is the true me. About a month after I BC'd I remember being in a public restroom at a restaurant and having to do a double take in the mirror after I glanced. I didn't recognize myself! I walked closer to the mirror, grinned and said (out loud, but not too loud) "Hello Amy, welcome. It's nice to meet you." Weird I know, but I felt like I had been hiding myself all those years. Like I was trying to be someone I wasn't....but now anymore because this is me.

NK: What do you love the most about your curls?

Amy: I love everything about my curls. I love that they're unique....I love that they're MINE!

NK: Any advice for newly naturals just starting the journey?

Amy: YES!!! Being natural is not easy. Having a relaxer was a breeze compared to this. When you're first starting out it's really easy to get discouraged, stick with it though. YouTube is the best, but be sure to find someone who has hair similar to YOURS. Everything won't work for everybody. Mind your ends, tie your hair up EVERY NIGHT with something satin or silk. Love your hair and be gentle with it. Don't rip it apart just because you found a knot.

NK: Any natural hair idols and why did you choose them?

Amy: Teri from tightlycurly.com. She's so knowledgeable and her hair is sooooo long!

NK: Do you have a signature or go to style?

SJ: My name is Steffie, i'm from South Florida.

NK: Tell me something about you?

SJ: I am a college student majoring in Nursing, I love all things beauty related and hope to have my own nail bar one day.

When did your natural hair journey begin and what influenced your decision to brave down that path?

It began Sept. 2010, I honestly can’t recall what influenced my decision, but I know the thought came over me on one of those nocturnal nights where I couldn’t sleep. Lol. But it was the best decision I made. I made up my mind, told my boyfriend, and haven't changed it since.

What is your regimen?

Ha regimen, what’s that?! I am a free spirit when it comes to my hair, I wash it when it needs to be washed (most likely always on a Sunday) and I follow up with a deep conditioner and then style.

What products and tools do you use?

The products I use mainly are Shea Moisture Shampoo and Herbal Essence Hello Hydration. Lately I have been doing wash n gos. My go to product for that style is Eco Styler Gel; and lastly Oyin Handmade Burnt Sugar Bomade and their Hair Dew. As for tools I use the “all mighty” Denman Brush and the also “holy grail” Tangle Teezer, along with a wide tooth comb.

Do you feel there is enough information for naturals?

Yes, of course! I mean I’m sure there is always more to learn because there is always a new discovery within the natural hair community. But if you have a question it can definitely be answered!

What has helped you in your healthy hair journey? Websites, forums etc

Oh my! YouTube being number one in my book! Along with YouTube I have found Curlynikki.com , bglhonline.com , thegoodhairblog.com , moptopmaven.com .

How do you think your natural hair affects the way others view you?

Aghh such a good question! I can say that I always get the “I love your hair, I tried to go to natural but I can’t” and I will explain that it’s very simple! I have inspired a few people at my job to go natural.

How has this journey impacted your perception of yourself?

Not only do I watch what I put in my hair, I watch what I ingest also, I’m eating a lot healthier, and have lost a few pounds along the way. My style has changed also, I am more open to styles and patterned fabric that I normally would have never been attracted to. This journey has allowed me to completely step out of my comfort zone and be my full self!

What do you love the most about your curls?

The versatility! I could be straight today, curly tomorrow, afro the next day. Plus I have always wanted curly hair even in my relaxed days, but never even knew I had them growing out of my own scalp.

Any advice for newly naturals just starting their journey?

Do your research and find a positive support system because your going to need someone to be there when you are frustrated and need to vent. Don’t think that just because a product works for someone it’s also going to work for you, that may not always be the case.

Any natural hair idols and why did you choose them?

This is real talk now....

I was once told that sometimes people aren't afforded the luxury of having the same type of upbringing as me. I then said, hell I wish they had it better than me. I have struggled just as much, if not more, than some. We didn't have a lot but we had love. There were times where the only Christmas gift I wanted was for the lights to come back on so we wouldn't have to steal electricity from my neighbors. I think back to those days and realize that I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. It taught me humbleness and bonding with family. See, when my folks didn't have, they would try their best to get it. When we fell short of lights, or food, we still had each other. While other people had new clothes to wear for school, we had to wear the same clothes from the year before. We made it work. It taught me to not be defined by fashion, but to create your own trend. I like to kid around now and say that I have grown folk swagger, but in reality I don't feel that way. I began to get comfortable enough in my own skin to just do my own thing. Some people follow my lead, some don't. My mom, dad, stepdad and siblings are my heroes. They have taught me, directly and indirectly, to work hard, stay out of trouble and do my best for them. Now that I have my own family, I will continue to do the same for them and do my damnedest make a way out of no way. The legal way.
I have grown to understand that some people have struggles of their own each and everyday. I'm not downing anyone's trials and tribulations or judging their shortcomings. But its not how you feel with the struggle, its how you deal with the struggle. Everyone can change. Its not a mindset, it's a change of mind. We as a people need to break the chain that society has cast upon us and float to the top of the stars instead of drowning to the bottom of the sea of complacency..and worse, we prove society right. There is a success story happening every hour. Be one of those stories.

I ROCK THIS!!!! (A Vent Session)

My natural is a testament to the beauty that I find in me. An expression of the appreciation of me. No need to alter or to change the way I look. I think it's sexy.

It's Courageous honestly. I deal with me as I am. That's pretty damn bold. I find beauty with no make up. No perm. No weave. No imitation of things that I was never intended to have.

For me it was freedom. No restrictions on what I should be. No attempt to reach a standard of beauty that excludes me. Has no room for me. Was never meant to encompass me. A standard that repeatedly left me coming up short or not good enough. I just could never measure up.

But not my natural. I rock this!!!!

Some can't comprehend. They debase it. Water it down. Think I'm some tree hugging, Afrocentric, soul sista. Not saying that I'm not.. But stop putting me in your mental boxes in your feeble attempt to understand. For me, my physical is connected to my spiritual well-being.

How could I be spiritually grounded when everything about me screamed that I was out of touch with reality. The real me.

If I know nothing else. I know me. I know where I channel my energy from. That part of me is grounded and spiritually I am constantly growing.

My natural, as a result of this will go un-straightened. Un-permed. Sometimes not styled. I have no urge to change my curl pattern. I love my curls, my fro, my kinky, whatever you want to call it. I keep my tresses healthy and looking quite good. It takes courage, confidence, determination, self-love. Its an expression of me and my psychological health.

You fail to understand, taming it, is the equivalent of taming my spirit. And those who know me, know that there's no doing that. Your attempt to change it, for me, is the equivalent of placing your construct of spirituality on me. My spirit it too strong for that. Therefore I have no room for your rude comments, your suggestions on what to do with it, how I should wear it, or telling me when it is or isn't appropriate.

If it's inappropriate for your event, then neither am I. We come as a package. If you can't deal with the way my hair is, then you can't deal with me. If you only want clones of a certain type of beauty, then I ain't for you.

My beauty broke the mold. It's in a league all of it's own. It's as unique as yours and it can exist all on it's own.

So when it comes to my natural I will continue to .... ROCK THIS!

The world should get familiar with D. Farley because I feel I got the total package (The Grind, The Flow, The Hustle, Diverse, Hardwork) I do it all. I started like a lot of your other Big Rappers as a DJ first & I feel that gave me a leg up on the music.

NK: How would you describe your style?

My Style is Lyrical, Energetic, Aggressive & Diverse. I could bite your head off on 1 song & turn around & make something smooth for the ladies; I’m well-rounded to say the least.

NK: Who do you currently listen to (or what would I find on your Ipod/MP3, etc)?

I’m currently listening to myself of course, T.I., Lil Wayne, Slim Thug, Mysonne, Big KRIT, & a lot more, too many to name.

NK: Any inspirations (could be musically or whomever inspires you)?

My inspirations are everything from music (Tupac, DMX, TI) to people such as Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Michael Jordan, Bill Cosby, Arthur Ashe, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Maya Angelou, Ray Charles, etc… I’m the type of person that looks for inspiration everyday because it’s hard to stay focused & motivated, so I try to be inspired off of everything.

Music, I got introduced to it by my cousin Shank from NY & my Homeboy Felt (Script). I’ve been rapping now for about 14 years but I must say seriously probably bout half of that.

NK: Do you think rap is changing? Progressing or Regressing?

Rap is definitely changing no doubt. As an artist now I think you are in position to have more control if you work your situation now. When I go to shows I always ask other artist for advice or just what road to take & they almost always say “Stay Independent”, because music is moving from the traditional sign a record deal. Artist are coming up on their own now & carrying more weight as an indie if your really grinding, so by time the labels come calling you’re in place to get your Million Dollar deals, which you wasn’t able to do before people like Cash Money, Jay Z, 50 Cent, Master P. So I’m really looking to be on that level some day so I can grow & bring other artist on as well.

NK: Any Current Projects or Releases?

I recently dropped my Mixtape “ExCeption 2 The Rule” & now I got my new Mixtape “SELF MADE” coming this Summer & it’s bigger & better because this one will be Hosted by “Slip & Slide DJ’s” DJ Richie Rich. So get ready for that to Heat your Summer Up.

This was an awesome opportunity to interview with someone that I've known for over eight years. I met Farley in college. Even back then, he had a hunger for music. Whether he was djing at a club, promoting 4 Show Entertainment, supporting his Fraternity (Kappa Alpha Psi), or engaging in rap battles, he always presented himself as a leader/go-getter! My First Mini Twist Attempt

I had an eventful weekend in Atlanta! Friday night I went to Curly Girls Rocks hosted by MeMyHairTheCity, Mahoganybella of Mahoganyknots, and CurlyGirlLexi at Harlem Nights Ultra Lounge. I didn't take any pictures from that night, but there were quite a few taken of me! Seems that a lot of people liked my three strand twist out (which pictures/videos do no justice)! Since I didn't take a lot of pictures myself, here's a video I posted on my Youtube channel after I left the event:

World Natural Hair, Health & Beauty Show 2011

Yesterday I attended the World Natural Hair Health & Beauty Show in College Park,GA. It was my second year attending. I thought I knew what to expect, but if you attended last year as well, you know that this year was way more intense! Upon arriving to get my ticket to enter the parking lot, there was a long line. After finding a parking space and entering the Gateway Convention Center there was multiple lines (ticket purchases and to get into the Show). So as I made my way to the end of the line, I saw so many creative hairstyles. Women had locs, braids, fros, kinky twist, twistouts, braidouts, sets, twa, etc! I maybe waited five minutes in line and this lady at the booth looked at the people standing in front of me and started asking if they had tickets. They said no and she told them to come up. TECHNICALLY, cutting the line but hey, I followed suit and had my ticket in hand within minutes later (sorry if that bothers anyone who waited in the line). Then to make my day go even better I walked to the set of doors where I entered on last year and to my surprise they were locked. At that time I wasn't aware there was another line to actually enter into the Show. As luck has it, someone was leaving out and opened the door for me.

So I walk in and saw lots of booths and even more dazzling styles all around me. Anyone who knows me personally knows that I always have my phone in hand (even as I was standing in line). I had already been in touch with CurlyandLovely (Yolanda) so we were going to meet each other at the Miss Jessie's booth. Before I could get to the booth, there were so many women coming up to me and grabbing my hair or asking me how I achieved my look. Imagine how elated I was to be in the presence of Arrested Development! If you're unfamiliar with the group or am thinking about the t.v. show, let me educate you a little! Arrested Development is a two time Grammy Award winning group with such hits as "Tennessee", "Mr. Wendal", and "People Everyday" just to name a few! Their songs were doorways into the silent plight of homelessness and cultural diversity in the early 90s. I was so pleased to see them because "Tennessee" is one of my favorite songs that I listen to, especially if I have a lot on my mind. Ran into Mahoganybella of Mahoganykots! Love her. She has one of the best personalities that I've ever met. First time I met her in person (besides Twitter) it was as if we were old friends catching up! Definitely family!

How shocked was I to see MissTammBaby? Lets just say veryyyyy! I walked pass her booth a few times and wanted to speak but she was surrounded by customers. It was ironic for me to find out that she watched my channel as well! Such a sweetheart. Cannot wait to try Koils by Nature! Thanks for the recommendations!

The following are pictures of how I wore my hair for the Show. I chose a three strand twist out with cold wave rodded ends. These pictures were taken once I arrived home! Overall, the look was a hit! Lots of people touched it. In my video I say it was "molested" and that was in a jokingly manner. Molestion is a serious matter. Hope no one was offended!

NK: What’s your name where are you from?

I’m Jazmin Rodgers and I’m from Michigan

NK: Tell me something about you.

I’m 19 and a full time college student, I also wish I could shop everday!

NK: When did your natural hair journey begin and what influenced your decision to brave down that path?

At first, I decided that I was going natural because I thought that there was no point in getting a perm anymore, I had a perm for 8 years and I really wanted to see my natural texture. It started at the beginning of my senior year.

NK: What is your regimen?

My regimen is simple, I wash my hair once a week with Shea Moisture Shampoo and Cantu leave in Conditioner. I then use my handy tangle teezer to detangle and put it in twist.

NK: What products and tools do you use?

The products that I use are the Shea Moisture Shampoo and Curl Smoothie for styling. Coconut oil is a must for moisturizing and hot oil treatments. I use the Tangle Teezer for detangling my hair, which is the best tool ever! And Cantu Shea Butter as a leave in Conditioner.

NK: Do you feel there is enough information for naturals?

I believe that there is plenty of information for Naturals! I learned a lot from Youtube, and websites like naturalsunshine.ning.com…I think that that if one seeks then they will find out what they need to know about natural and the steps to healthier hair. Also, with so many women documenting their natural hair journeys on these sites, there are many women to relate to, and a video for virtually every question you may have.

NK: What has helped you in your healthy hair journey? Websites, forums etc

Youtube is the first place I go to when I have a question. Just watching videos on natural hair gives me a lot of helpful information on what I can do with my hair. Before I went on my journey I knew absolutely NOTHING on how to care for my hair, other than going to the salon to get a perm in it. Also, websites like naturalsunshine.ning.com is a place where one can receive support and relate to other women who are going through the same thing that you are. You can discuss natural hair and encourage other women on the site.

NK: How do you think your natural hair affects the way others view you?

I think that people definitely think that I’m different from other females. I think that you must be very confident when rocking your natural curls. Other people will see how confident you are and feed off of your positivity!

NK: How has this journey impacted your perception of yourself?

I think that it proved that I’m not afraid to be different and follow the crowd. I realize that I’m not afraid to take risk, and my hair is an expression of who I am. I think that I’m more confident, and just feel that my natural beauty is something better than any relaxer or chemical can do for me.

NK: What do you love the most about your curls?

I love the versatility! When they are defined I just think that they are very lovely, and I get many compliments on them. I also like that I can switch between curly and straight hair.

NK: Any advice for newly naturals just starting the journey?

PATIENCE! Healthy long hair must come with patience. That is something that I am working on now, is to be patient with the growth of my hair, it will come. Also, RESEARCH is key in beginning your natural hair journey. You must know what you’re getting yourself into when you begin.

NK: What’s your name where are you from?

Tam. I am originally from Lexington, Kentucky, but I currently live in Great Falls, Montana.

NK: Tell me something about you?

I served 4 years Active Duty in the United States Air Force, but now I am just a military spouse. I have lived in Montana for 5 years and am finally leaving to move to Charlotte, NC!

NK: When did your natural hair journey begin and what influenced your decision to brave down that path?

I got my last relaxer in May 2010. I decided to transition to natural in support of a friend who also wanted to go natural, but I also had a lot of damaged from wearing tight buns and a cotton beret as part of my military uniform.

NK: What is your regimen?　

I wash once a month, Co-wash twice a week, Deep Condition Weekly, Apply Protein Treatments every 8 weeks, Hot Oil Treatment once a month, Moisturize daily!

NK: What products and tools do you use?

I use whatever works, I do not stick to one particular brand. I make my own moisturizers using oils & butters. I am a big fan of EVOO and Coconut Oil. I love Dr. Bonner's Castile Peppermint Soap, Nature's Gate conditioners, Giovanni Direct Leave-in and VO5 Moisture Milk Conditioner.

NK: Do you feel there is enough information for naturals?

I do! Naturals are everywhere: Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Blogs... And all of them (us) are ready to share information.

NK: What has helped you in your healthy hair journey?

Websites, forums, etc. YouTube is where I got started! I watch videos everyday!

NK: How do you think your natural hair affects the way others view you?

There are only very few naturals where I live so no one really understands what is going on with my hair. I constantly get compliments on my transitioning styles and always get asked a million questions. I think that once I move, am fully natural, and around people that actually understand natural hair I will get a response.

NK: How has this journey impacted your perception of yourself?　

I am a lot more disciplined than I originally thought. I have not given up or given in. I have a lot more respect for people and a lot less judgemental.

NK: What do you love the most about your curls?

Their health! I love it that my hair is so thick and full! They represent the original me!

NK: Any advice for newly naturals just starting the journey?

Be patient! Don't be afraid to experiment and try out new things. Remember that it's your hair so follow your own rules!

NK: Any natural hair idols and why did you choose them?

My Mother is one of my natural hair idols because she has been natural her whole life. She has never felt like she needed to have relaxed hair to fit in. Tracee Ellis Ross is also my natural hair idol, because even though my Mom has always been natural, she was the first person I ever associated natural hair with. (My Mother has very fine curls and more of a 3B hair type and my hair is thick and coarse more like Tracee's)

My Name is Chad P and I am from Waycross, GA!

NK: Why should the world get familiar with you?

I personally believe I am one of the few underground artists out right now that respect hiphop for what it is. I LOVE hot beats but I also respect the art of the craft. Which means, when I rap (Word Bend as I put it) lyrical content is a priority, from what I’m saying, to how it’s put together, and how I’m saying it.

NK: Do you think it's hard for Underground artist to get their music out? Get Record Deals?

Yes, I find it extremely hard for unsigned rappers who are truly talented to get their name out. Money has diluted the music industry to the point where true talented isn’t respected. Then there are artist like myself that rather make good music for themself than to sale out and make it for everyone else.

NK: How would you describe your style?

Original. I’m me on each and every track. I really hate being compared to other artist so I strive to be different and stand out.

NK: Are you often compared to other artist? (signed or unsigned)

Yes, Andre 3000 is a common name when comparing my music.

There has been Drake comparisons also.

NK: Who do you currently listen to (or what would I find on your IPod/MP3, etc)?
Lil Wayne and Rick Ross.

NK: Any inspirations (could be musically or whomever inspires you)?
Love is a huge inspiration of my lyrics. I “word bend” about how I feel and what I’ve been through. Current situations may influence what I write about but I never write about anyone in particular.

NK: Hmm… What exactly is Word Bend? Like if I looked up "Word Bend" in the Chad-itionary, what would it say?!?

Word Bending. Verb; The art of word play.. how Chad P plays on words and makes entire bars rhyme with one another.

Ex: “I ball like Carl Malone, Bought a car without a loan, B*tches give me ass that I’ve only known an hour long”

NK: I can definitely see that Love influences your lyrics/music. Not many rappers share that side of their lives. If anything, they rap about everything but love.

NK: Do you think rap is changing? Progressing or Regressing?

Yes it’s changing. Regressing! Artists nowadays are only focus on getting to the money. The passion and love of the craft is rarely found on the radio. DJs wont’ play a song unless their crowd likes it and the song being spun usually lacks content. Women, Drugs, Money seems to be the only topic of discussion.

NK: For awhile, Southern music was dominated with dancing and just having fun. We even had a moment where artist were socially conscience. I see you've noticed the trend of artist talking but selling dope. Every song is about money, hoes, and cars. But is it the artist fault or are they playing to an increasing demand of that type of music?

Both… I think artist should do what’s in their heart. But music should be fun. The Demand for a certain sound has changed the culture of things but at some point an example should be set for the younger artist and listeners. Someone has to let them know its ok to talk about how you feel and what’s going on in the world. Besides, that’s what the BIGGEST artist do. The Guccis and Waka Flockas are often forgotten shortly after their career is over. Michael Jacksons Jay Zs, Biggies, Kanyes will be remembered long after their done rapping.

I performed a Spoken Word video of this poem and had it posted on my youtube channel briefly. In that brief timeframe, I received a lot of awesome feedback. Read if you dare...

"Right?"

It was suppose to be just sex right?

So feelings weren’t suppose to be involved right?

We were suppose to just do our thing and kinda move on about the situation

We weren’t suppose to get attached to each other

We weren’t suppose to be in anticipation of that next touch, that next time we got to see each other, that next kiss and hug

But somehow we did, and somehow I don’t know what to say, and I don’t know what to do

Cause when you look at me my heart kinda wants to walk away

But then it sways and it stands still and it doesn’t want to move

And it’s all locked up and I’m restless and I’m feeling like a fool

Cause I keep waking up in the middle of the night thinking that you are next to me

And wishing you were beside me to hold me tight, cuddle and kiss me like you did those times before when we first met

How you would grab me in the bed and never let me go our fingers would cross and we would just hold each other tight

What happened?

I know my feelings began to change and I think yours did too cause you said I was making it hard for you

I can’t determine how you feel about me

You say “hey, I was upfront with you on how I wanted things, you didn’t listen!”

“I told you things would end of this way. Calm down. I told you. I told you. I told you!”

But what did you tell yourself?

That you didn’t want a relationship

That I was a good girl, wifey material, but you just weren’t ready?

Does it make sense to let someone like me who really cares about you walk away.

At the end of the night when I was laying next to you it wasn’t about the sex

It was about how you made me feel

How my heart reached out for you and wanted you

But now I don’t know how to feel

Cause it was suppose to be just sex…right?

Why I Went Natural

“I don't like myself, I'm crazy about myself” I’m a lover of me! My grandma always said “can’t NOBODY love you the way YOU can love you!” It took me several years to understand what she what she meant by it. I started this natural hair journey because I wanted to discover and accept Tanisha N. Jones, flaws and all!

NK: When did your natural hair journey begin and what influenced your decision to brave down that path?

My natural hair journey began August 2, 2010. I transitioned for 6 months then did my BC on Feb 15, 2011!

NK: What is your regimen?

Daily: Mist with water, moisturize with natural Shea butter, and seal with a mixture of essential oils (olive, jojoba, sweet almond, emu)

Weekly: Every Tuesday and Thursday I co-wash my hair (the first month after my BC I washed my hair every day, loved the water on my scalp and the way my hair just curled up!)

Monthly: Deep condition and hot oil treatment

Nightly Protective Styles/Aides: Twist (big, small, medium), satin pillow, and satin head bonnet

NK: What products and tools do you use?

I’ve only tried one product line, and that’s Carol’s Daughter. I started out with the children’s “Magical Beauty” Collection in September (the detangler is awesome) and have been using it every since. I also use the Healthy Hair Butter, especially when I twist my hair up at night. I also use HelloHydration Conditioner by Herbal Essences. I also use the Follicle Invigorator from Hydratherma Naturals hair care line. I really don’t use a lot of products, have seen a bunch that I would like to try but never do. Afraid I may become a product junkie! My favorite product to use is natural Shea butter. Yea, it smells funny but after a while you get use to it!lol

Tools: Wide-tooth comb, rat-tail comb (only for parting), Bobby-pins, and my fingers!!

NK: Do you feel there is enough information for naturals?

There is a lot of info out there for naturals, just tune into YouTube! Especially NATURALLYKELA! It’s all about the research. Take your time and read these things, not everything works for everyone!

NK: How do you think your natural hair affects the way others view you?

I never really thought of what other people felt about my hair until my daddy saw my “BC!” He said, “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?” I was a bit hurt but then I looked in the mirror, gave myself a wink, and smiled! He later played in it and told me how soft it was and that “it’s just hair, you’re still beautiful!” My co-workers loved it, in fact several were inspired to get rid of the relaxer as well! NK: How has this journey impacted your perception of yourself?

Wow, I have to say when I first started this journey I was afraid to try bold colors and big earrings. Now, I love me some bright colors and big earrings. I’m discovering me all over again. I can honestly say I’ve never been more confident. I always felt like I needed someone to validate me in the past. Now, I’m my own validation, who cares what you think, THIS IS ME!

NK: What do you love the most about your curls?

I love everything about my curls: pattern, softness, color! The fact that all I have to do is wet it and go is a plus for me! I love my curly hair!

NK: Any advice for newly naturals just starting the journey?

RESEARCH, please! Don’t be afraid to cut it off and rock the TWA. Try new things! Fall in love with accessories. And most importantly, KEEP YOUR HAIR MOISTERIZED!

NK: Any natural hair idols and why did you choose them?

Saleemah Cartwright, fell in love with her “how to’s” on YouTube and Ms. Tekela Murray, love your styles!

I recently had the pleasure to catch up with a friend from high school who decided to "go" natural! I had seen her last year at a hometown celebration where she told me she had watched my youtube channel and loved it! Of course I was elated to hear that someone from my hometown had found my channel but even more than that I was excited that she was natural as well. Her hair in her signature curly faux-hawk accented with a golden blond and brown combination was fitting to her personality. So when I saw her at a mutual friend's birthday celebration (who willl also be featured on here soon) I knew I had to interview her. I present to you the first Curlyhead Cutie, Miss Madelyn Irving...

NK: Whats your name where are you from?
Madelyn Irving from a small town Buena Vista, GA

NK: Tell me something about you?
I love life, music, hair, and fashion. I live outside the box. If everyone else is doing it, you can count on me to do something different. I love to travel and meet new positive people. I have a 4 yr old son whom I adore and is the reason why I live. That pretty much sums it up! Simple hunh?!?

NK: When did your natural hair journey begin and what influenced your decision to brave down that path?
I decided to go natural about a year ago. I have very fine hair. It took a lot for me to have any body or volume and all I could do was wrap it. My relaxed hair never held any curls longer than a couple of minutes. I made the choice to cut my hair in March ‘10. Although I didn’t wear it curly and I always went to get it straightened. One day I wanted to feel liberated and decided to wear my natural curls. It took some getting used to because I was “different” but at the same time I felt some sort of empowerment and confidence.

NK: What is your regimen?　
I shampoo and deep condition my hair once a week with One 'n Only Argan Oil Moisture Repair Shampoo and Conditioner. For my deep conditioner I use either Shea Moisture Masque Deep conditioner Or One n Only Argan Oil Deep Conditioning Mask. I’m married to both. I leave the deep conditioner on for about 15-20 minutes and sometimes I sit under the dryer depending on how much time I have. In between shampoos I cowash using whe One ‘n Only Argan Oil Conditioner and finishing off with cantu. I can’t sleep without my silk bonnet to protect my hair.

NK: What products and tools do you use?
I’m some what of a product junkie however I have narrowed it down to a few that I use on a regular basis and I’ve found works better than others.
1. Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream

2. Mizani True Texture for Natural Curls Moisture Stretch
3. Crème of Nature Argan Oil Foam (quick wash and go)
4. Ecostyle (Olive Oil)
5. Wide tooth comb to comb through my hair while washing or conditioning

NK: Do you feel there is enough information for naturals?
I do feel there is enough information however I don’t feel like there is enough information when it comes to the different hair types. I say that because I’ve tried other products/styles/treatments that have worked for others but I wasn’t really impressed when I tried it. I think it’s all about experience. Even though there’s information out there it still takes trail and error to find out what works best your particular hair type.

NK: What has helped you in your healthy hair journey? Websites, forums etc

Yes! Everyone isn’t bold enough to make the decision to go natural and I think it takes confidence and knowing who you are.

NK: How has this journey impacted your perception of yourself?　
I’m not afraid to be different. When I was in weavetastic everything was fine and I was like everyone else. Now I have confidence and I have come to love myself even more than before. My confidence level through the roof and I feel liberated.

NK: What do you love the most about your curls?
I can wash and go. I don’t have to do much to my curls.

NK: Any advice for newly naturals just starting the journey?
It takes some getting used to but I say embrace your beauty. Accept your curls!

All Dolled Up: MUA Spotlight with Imari Henry

I've had a fascination with playing in makeup since my childhood. I would often lock myself in the bathroom and secretly doll myself up in my mother's makeup! Red lipstick, eyeliner, and blush were my favorites. Not much has changed for me. Eyeliner for me is a must and lips (gloss or stick). I had the pleasure of interviewing a doll who I absolutely adore. Let's get All Dolled Up with Ms. Imari Henry:

NK: What's your name and where are you from?

My name is Imari Henry and I am originally from West Palm Beach FL however I grew up in the little town known as Albany GA.

NK: Tell me a little something about yourself?

I really enjoy expressing myself whether it’s through makeup, painting, or even putting together my wardrobe. I enjoy reading but I don’t really have a favorite book or author; I believe that it is important to keep the mind stimulated. I’m a county girl so I value nature and all its aspects. Some days I like to just sit outside take in all that Mother Nature has to offer. I love to travel! And I love food! Lol. And of course I love makeup :)

NK: How long have you been a MUA?

I have always had a strong passion for makeup growing up. My mother was always into it and in a sense I followed her footsteps. I have been in the industry for about a year now and I love it. Basically for now it’s a hobby, I’m not sure how far I’m going to take it but I love what I do.

NK: Any favorite brands?

My favorite brands are MAC, Iman, Urban decay eye shadow primer and shadows, Clinique, and Mary Kay. I use it all. I’m actually looking into a new line out of Atlanta ill have details about it soon on my fb page.

NK: What prompted your desire to become a MUA?

I love fashion and beauty! And like I stated before my mother has a lot of these qualities. She loves fashion, styling, and makeup. She inspires me tremendously.

NK: Do you think there are any misconceptions when it comes to makeup?

I honestly believe this 100%. Many women of color are afraid to wear makeup. They have the impression that its taboo saying things like “it looks caked up” or “doesn’t look natural”. There are certain techniques when applying your makeup that will make it natural. Using the right tools (foundation brush) and starting with a nice clean face is important.

NK: What's your skin regimen?

Skincare is extremely important!!!! Every morning I wake up and give myself a facial. My suggestion is that you make it apart of your routine each day whether it’s before you brush your teeth or in the shower. After that I pat dry my face and add a moisturizer. Having a healthy and clean face makes makeup feel and look its best. It also preserves youth. It’s also good to take breaks from makeup, your face need oxygen and drink lots of water.

NK: What's in your makeup bag/case?

My makeup case is about to pop! Lol I have every kind of makeup under the sun and more. My small makeup bag I use for personal use has a Mary Kay mineral foundation, Iman bronzer/blush, Revlon Lipstick peach that I tend to mix with a brown lip gloss to get that natural nude look or pink lip gloss to make it pop, L'Oreal voluminous mascara (black), MAC eye liner (black) and that’s about it. I don’t usually wear eye shadow or foundation during the week because I’m always on the go. On a daily base I would probably do a partial eye liner, mascara, lips, blush, and maybe a bronzer.

NK: What should everyone have in their makeup bag?

Everyone should have lips in there makeup bag. I know that some are afraid of makeup but lips are a must! Get a simple nude or natural color lipstick and add gloss. Mix colors to create different look. This is something simple for everyone. I would also suggest for those who wear makeup to head to the nearest Sephora or ULTA Beauty store and grab the urban decay eye shadow primer. It’s the best!! It enhances the colors and makes your shadow last longer.

NK: Any advice to those interested in becoming a MUA?

My advice to anyone that is interested in becoming anything in life is to just go for it. You don’t know what can happen if you don’t try. I started out just playing around with makeup and with creativity and the right mindset I took it to another level. It’s still growing and there is more growth to come so stay tuned :)

Pressed & Feathered: A Straightened Natural

Let me be perfectly honest, if you know me you know I'm a natural who isn't afraid of straightening my hair. I often see these horror stories of heat damage and hair not reverting. I'm constantly bombarded with Hair Nazis who believe that Naturals should only wear their hair in protective styles or in kinky/coily/curly states Personally I don't allow myself to think like that or impose my beliefs on others. My journey has been trial and error. I'm confident that other naturals journies have been as well.
This video showcase me with my hair in pin curls! Why pin curls? Being that my hair is layered, it feathers all on its own if I rake my fingers through it. I wanted the feathers to last a few days later. I wrap my hair nightly so I didn't want to add more heat the next few days. The pin curls allowed me to unwrap my hair and go. Watch and enjoy!

P.S. Yes, those are colored contacts (prescription)! I no longer wear them. I will address that at a later time.

Straw Set on Natural Hair

This video shows my first straw set. I must say that it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I used drinking straws I purchased at Wal Mart. Depending on the length of my hair, I would cut the straws, apply the solution of my choice, wrap (or roll) the hair around the straw in the same way you'd apply rods Secure the top of the straw with a bobby pin. Do something nice for your hair and enjoy this easy protective style!

The moment we just shared still seems unreal

Our bodies danced passionately together just moments ago

The gentleness of his tongue as it swam in the depths of my body’s ocean

Created such a feeling within me that made my heart want to run

Versatility of Natural Hair

I DO NOT have a license so that is my disclaimer. For the past sixteen years I've been doing my own hair. My aunt was a licensed cosmetologist when I was in middle school and I can recall going through her rollers, rods, playing with her mannequins, and doing waves (yeah y'all remember that style) on her hair and my mom's. I began experimenting with Micros during high school and made that my choice of style throughout that time while I cheered. For nearly three years I have been on a healthy hair adventure. I'm not a hardcore Natural who believes that my hair should only be worn in a kinky/curly/coily state. I believe in the versatility of natural hair. Here are a few of my looks thus far.
